Contact your MPs

If the Tarkine is to be protected, it is crucial that MPs receive constant pressure from their electorates. Emails and phone calls are a great way to demonstrate community concern, so we have compiled a list of key politicians who are responsible for local, state and federal environmental decisions.

Having trouble with how to write to your Member of Parliament?
Here's our template!

Dear [Politician title and name] - address ministers as "The Hon. [insert name]" and senators as "Senator the Hon [insert name]"

Protection of the Tarkine Wilderness in Tasmania must be a priority.  It is the largest remaining tract of cool temperate rainforest in Australia -- an extremely rare forest globally -- and a culturally significant area of Aboriginal sites. The Tarkine provides habitat for over 60 rare, threatened and endangered species, including the last disease-free refuge for the iconic Tasmanian Devil.

Protecting the Tarkine as a National Park will create more jobs from wilderness tourism than from proposed forestry and mining operations.  Now AND tomorrow.

Neither major party has a good record on the Tarkine: although protected under the Howard government by interim National Heritage listing, the Rudd Labor government allowed this to lapse. The Tasmanian State Government are logging its ancient old-growth forests and large-scale mining exploration leases have been issued across swaths of this world-class heritage area.

What are your party's present policies regarding the Tarkine?

Will you work to make the Tarkine a National Park?

As you know, a large proportion of your electorate are strongly supportive of environmental protection. Your response to the Tarkine is a test of you and your party’s resolve to protect Australia’s great natural areas for future generations.

This issue will influence my vote in the next Federal election, so I would like to request an individual reply to my letter, not a ‘pro forma’.

Yours,

[name]
